Hybrid Technology Celebrates 10 Years

December 3, 2009—La Crosse, WI. This month, hybrid technology will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. Hybrid technology was first introduced in December of 1999 when the Honda Insight made its debut as America's first gasoline‐electric hybrid vehicle. The original Insight earned an EPA highway fuel economy rating of 70 mpg. Hybrid technology drastically changed the landscape of the automotive world—and the world in general—by offering a cleaner, more efficient transportation method. The inception and evolution of hybrid technology has played a critical role in the evolving fight against global warming. Honda Motorwërks will be hosting festivities commemorating this milestone in clean energy transportation on Saturday, December 12, at Honda Motorwërks, located at 4th and Cameron Streets, La Crosse WI. Admission is free and the general public is invited to attend. Activities for the “Celebration of Hybrids” event will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will include:

(10:30 – 11:00) Panel of current hybrid drivers to answer questions regarding hybrid driving and ownership

(11:00 – 11:15) 15 minute driving clinic for participants to learn fuel efficient driving tips

(11:15 – 4:00) Hybrid test‐drives where participants can try out the driving tips they learned during the driving clinic

(11:15 – 12:00) Free tire pressure checks

(11:30 – 12:00) Special guest Eric Powers, founder of Madison’s Hybridfest, will present on the progression of hybrid awareness and provide information about this year’s Hybridfest
Green Drive Expo

(12:00 – 12:30) Special guest Bradlee Fons, founder of the Milwaukee Area Hybrid Group, along with renowned hypermiler Justin Fons will share stories and answer questions about
hypermiling, and share information about Drive $mart America

Chris Schneider, the host of the event, has been an advocate for hybrid technology since its beginning—teaching others about hybrid technology and its benefits. Chris presents at energy fairs, schools, and conferences, in addition to hosting his own events—all to raise awareness of the clean energy transportation options available. He is recognized in the industry as a hybrid technology expert—earning him the nickname “The Hybrid Guru.” Chris will be in attendance at the “Celebration of Hybrids” to answer questions and provide his “Insights.”

The Honda Insight Returns

Hybrid Within Your Reach
Scan the headlines and it’s obvious the world needs a new hybrid solution, and fast. What the world deserves is a little fun along the way.

The Revelation

This October at the Paris Auto Show, Honda will reveal a concept version of our new small hybrid vehicle— with spirited performance and all the amenities you’d expect. This new car will be priced significantly lower than hybrids available today, making it possible for more people to drive hybrids.

The Name
What do you call such a car? Honda delivered the first mass-production hybrid model to the U.S. and Europe back in 1999, the Honda Insight. Perfect name, right? Now used for our newest hybrid, the name honors our historical commitment to environmentally responsible technology. Takeo Fukui, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. CEO put it best:"The original Honda Insight pioneered hybrid technology in the U.S. and remains a symbol of Honda's commitment to innovative technology and fuel efficiency. This new Insight will break new ground as an affordable hybrid within the reach of customers who want great fuel economy and great value."

The Insight
The Insight sports a unique style and sophisticated design, sharing styling cues with the groundbreaking FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle. The Insight concept, a futuristic five-door hatchback, is powered by a new lighter weight and efficient Integrated Motor Assist IMA® system that offers great performance. And there’s no shortage of amenities to liven up your commute.

The Timing
When can you get your hands on your very own Insight? Luckily you won't have to wait long. It goes on sale in the U.S. during the spring of 2009. In the meantime, check back here for photos, news and live updates direct from the Paris Auto Show October 4-19, 2008.

Bring on the Hybrids
Following the launch of the new Insight, Honda also plans to introduce another unique sporty hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z Concept, first shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. CR-Z is Honda's new hybrid sports car, and the name stands for "Compact Renaissance Zero." Two new hybrids from Honda. The news can't get much better than that.

Congratulations to Mrs. Theresa Payne for being a Top Notch Teacher.

Honda Motorwerks would like to give a special thanks to the August 2008 Top Notch Teacher Mrs. Theresa Payne. Mrs. Payne dedicates her life to teaching 1st graders or “Smarties” as she likes to call them at Miller Elementary School in Tomah, WI. Not only has she been a big inspiration in the classroom but is quite crafty on the computer also. She has helped Miller Elementary set up their school website and even created her own website that allows teachers, students, and parents to further connect and know what’s going on in the classroom. It’s the little details like this that make it easy for us to congratulate her on a Top Notch Job!

For her sincere dedication Honda Motorwerks will be donating the use of a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid during the month of August. It’s our way of showing the local community that we really do appreciate the work that teachers do and it also allows them to experience a hybrid vehicle that can also impact our community and environment.
